Marias Healthcare's clinic in Shelby, Montana serves as a lifeline for a rural service area spanning Glacier, Pondera, Liberty, and Toole counties — reaching Valier, Conrad, and Sunburst alongside Shelby itself. Swank was selected for the project through a competitive interview process, drawing on our long history of medical facility work and a track record of successful project delivery. Rather than build new, the project reimagined a vacant former Shopko box store into a modern, patient-focused ambulatory care facility. The year-long renovation consolidated medical, podiatry, dental, optometry, behavioral health, and pharmacy services under one roof, now serving more than 5,800 patients. As CEO Jamie Brownell put it, "Access to health care is our driving force and we want to eliminate barriers."

The interior design carries that mission through. Generous circulation corridors emphasize openness, visibility, and ease of navigation throughout the facility, with reception and pharmacy positioned in public-facing areas while exam rooms, treatment spaces, behavioral health rooms, and specialty suites are arranged for operational efficiency and privacy. Wood ceiling elements and warm material accents soften the scale of the former retail space, turning a big-box shell into a calm clinic environment.
